Episode 18 - Does Anyone Actually Understand the Value You’re Creating?

You can be doing an excellent job and still make it difficult for people to picture you in the role you want next.

That is particularly true when your reputation is built around delivery.

You get the work done.

Your clients LOVE you.

The team you lead performs.

You are SOOOOO dependable.

And that can be exactly where the problem starts.

Because if the people making decisions about your future only see you through the lens of the role you already have, they may not have enough evidence to imagine you operating at the next level.

In this episode, I talk about:

  • Why strong performance in your current role does not automatically signal readiness for the next one
  • What happens when you keep proving the capability people already know you for
  • Why feeling undervalued can make you start interpreting everything through that lens
  • How the outside market often forces you to articulate your value more clearly
  • Why the people making the decision need to see evidence of the level you want next

A useful question to ask yourself is:

Has your current organisation ever heard you describe yourself as clearly as you do when you are speaking to recruiters or considering a move?

Because quite often, the moment you decide to leave is the moment you finally start looking properly at your experience, judgement, commercial value and readiness for something bigger.

And then another question follows:

Who inside the organisation actually sees that evidence?

Not just your clients.

Not just your team.

The people who influence promotion, succession, a broader remit or your next senior opportunity.

Because being excellent at the role you have and being understood at the level you want next are not the same thing.
